The Navy has identified $22 million in cost avoidance through opening previously sole source contracts to competition during the period April—June 1983. Since the spring of 1982, the Navy has established Competition Advocates at all major contracting activities.
Marinette Marine Corporation (Marinette, Wis.) has been awarded a contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command for the construction of 10 Large Yard Repair Berthing and Messing Vessels. The YRBM (L) vessels have a 146-foot overall length, 46-foot beam, and a 688 long ton displacement.
The Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries, Pascagoula, Miss., was recently awarded a $378.7-million contract by the U.S. Navy to construct the third ship of the Wasp Class of amphibious assault ships, LHD-3, and to commence preliminary work on a fourth LHD.
Capt. David Cunningham recently reported to the Coast Guard yard in Curtis Bay, Md. He will serve as the yard's manager of financial operations, a position which oversees the shipyard's fiscal, supply and procurement activities, as well as the ships' inventory control point.
